Hawk-A-Thon Frequently Asked QuestionsThe 2nd Annual Hawk-A-Thon is the biggest fundraiser for both ASB and PTSA! It replaced ASB’s Magazine Drive, where more than half of a student’s fundraising effort was given to the magazine company, and was incredibly well received by both students and CKMS supporters. This FAQ answers questions you might have about this relatively new and exciting fundraiser. What is the Hawk-A-Thon?Hawk-A-Thon (HAT) is a fun and very important fundraising event for both ASB and PTSA. Students participate in a noncompetitive, relay-style event that promotes physical fitness and school spirit. They ask family and friends to sponsor them. After minimal expenses, all proceeds stay at CKMS to benefit the students (no funds need to be shared with an outside fundraising company). HAT replaces the Magazine Drive of years past as ASB’s major fundraiser. What is the Hawk-A-Thon’s financial goal?ASB and PTSA set a joint goal of $30,000. The proceeds will be split between the two organizations, with ASB getting 60% and PTSA getting 40%. How will the raised Hawk-A-Thon money be spent?Every student at CKMS benefits from the funds raised by Hawk-A-Thon:
When is the Hawk-A-Thon and what is its schedule? This year’s Hawk-A-Thon will be held on Friday, September 16th. The event is one and a half hours per grade. Students will gather 15 minutes ahead of the time in the gym to get into their teams and receive instructions before heading to the track. All teams will run the relay for one hour, with an additional 15 minutes to cool down and get back to class. The grade level track schedule follows:
How will the relay teams be formed? How big is each team? The week prior to the event, students will form their own teams within their 1st period class. Each relay team will have six runners. Will there be water and snacks available to the students during the relay?Yes. All students will receive a Hawk Logo Water Bottle before the relay and they can fill their bottles by the track. Farmhouse Market is generously donating cut fruit, pretzels (including a gluten-free option), and popsicles for students to snack on during the relay. Do you need volunteers for the event? Can I come watch my student run?PTSA is running the event and needs volunteers to count laps and serve snacks during! Contact Fran Ellul (franellul@hotmail.com) if you can help. You are welcome to come to the track to cheer on the students as they run. What happened to the Magazine Drive?CKMS students sold magazines in September for many years. The magazine company received a whopping 60% of the collected money, leaving ASB with only 40% for their fundraising effort. The school did a survey a couple of years ago and discovered that the majority of parents no longer support the Magazine Drive. Last year’s survey results show that parents overwhelmingly support the Hawk-A-Thon because it allows them to make direct donations to the school to best support their students. A relay-style event was chosen because it is a healthy, physically-based challenge that also builds school spirit. If you want to renew any of your magazine subscriptions or order new magazines, you can still do so. Contact the CKMS Office for details (425-831-8225). As in years past, 40% of your magazine purchase will benefit CKMS. If Hawk-A-Thon is ASB’s biggest fundraiser, why are all funds going to PTSA?ASB and PTSA partnered to run this event together. However, there are many rules that restrict the co-mingling of ASB and PTSA funds. For this reason, ASB and PTSA have signed a contract to simplify the money collection process. The contract stipulates that PTSA will collect and disburse all the sponsorship money. ASB will receive 60% of the proceeds, with the remaining 40% going to PTSA. Will students still earn prizes? If so, what are they?Yes, students will still earn prizes for the sponsorship money that they bring in. See the Prize Structure sheet (in the sponsor envelope or online at www.ckmsptsa.org). How is my student’s class determined for the classroom prize(s)?The student’s 1st period classroom and teacher are used to determine the prizes for most money turned in by a class. Can students hand in their envelopes after the HAT event?Yes! Donations to ASB and PTSA are accepted and appreciated at any time during the year. This FAQ didn’t answer my question. Who should I contact? If you have any further questions or comments, please contact Principal Dunckel (dunckelk@svsd410.org), or this year’s Hawk-A-Thon chair, Lori Hollasch (lori@hollasch.net). |
